About our Service

Our Cardiology team at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center is here to help pets with heart problems. Our team will work with your primary care veterinarian to manage your pet’s heart condition.

Our cardiology service is trained and equipped to perform the following procedures/diagnostic tests for your pet:

  • Echocardiograms (ultrasound of the heart)
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • PDA correction (using a catheter based, noninvasive method which decreases surgical recovery time for your pet)
  • Pulmonic Stenosis (balloon) valvuloplasty and Pulmonic Stenosis Stent placement
  • Pacemaker placement
  • 24-hour Holter Monitors and multi-day Event Monitors (to evaluate abnormal heart rhythms, fainting episodes, and to monitor antiarrhythmic therapy)
  • Degenerative valve disease
  • Cardiomyopathies
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Arrhythmias
  • Coughing (less common in cats)
  • Difficult, labored breathing
  • Difficulty exercising
  • Syncope (fainting)

If your pet has any of these symptoms, take him/her to your primary veterinarian or, if it is after hours, to an emergency clinic.

We are available for routine appointments during the week, and we are always available for emergencies working with our Emergency Service.

**We do not offer teleconsultations. If teleconsultation services for x-rays, echocardiograms, ECGs, or Holter/Event monitors are needed, please have your family veterinarian search the internet for a service provider.
