Specialization: Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) and the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI)

Overview

Dr. Silke Hecht received her veterinary degree in 1998 and Doctorate (Dr. med. vet.) in 2001 both from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany. She completed her residency in Diagnostic Imaging at Tufts University in 2005. She is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) and the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (ECVDI). Dr. Hecht is a professor of Radiology at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. She is a consultant for VetCT. Areas of interest include MRI, neuroimaging and oncologic imaging. She has published more than 100 peer reviewed publications, has written more than 25 book chapters, and is the Editor of a Textbook on Veterinary Radiology. She is an Associate Editor of the Veterinary Radiology and Ultrasound journal. She has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings and is involved with (neuroimaging) training of radiology and neurology residents nationally and internationally.

Research Focus

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, neuro and oncologic imaging; investigating the diagnostic yield of different MRI sequences in small animal neuroimaging; development of diagnostic criteria for improved MRI diagnoses.

Clinical Focus

Interpretation of imaging studies (radiology, ultrasound, CT/MRI and scintigraphy) for small, exotic and large animal cases presented to UTCVM. Clinical area of interest is MRI and neuroimaging.

Teaching Focus

Radiology teaching of veterinary students (both pre-clinical and during clinical rotations). Imaging training (specifically in MRI) for radiology and neurology residents within and beyond the UT system.

Outreach Focus

Involvement with the European College of Vet. Diagnostic Imaging; Director for North America with the International Vet. Radiology Assoc.; Diagnostic imaging education for local practitioners and veterinarians worldwide.
