  DEPARTMENTAL MISSION

The mission of Large Animal Clinical Sciences is to advance the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery by the promotion of scholarly activity, education, and maintenance of animal health. Our goal is to achieve distinction while sustaining balance in teaching, service, and research.

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences was established under its former name, The Department of Rural Practice, when the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee was established in 1974. The primary purposes of establishing the college were to teach students, assist practitioners, serve the public through education and clinical service, and make new discoveries through research. Large Animal Clinical Sciences is composed of:

  • EQUINE HOSPITAL
  • FARM ANIMAL HOSPITAL
  • EQUINE PERFORMANCE AND REHABILITATION CENTER

These hospitals primarily serve horses and cattle, but also routinely provide care for a wide variety of species including sheep, goats, pigs (commercial and pet pigs), South American Camelids (llama, alpaca), and other large animals.

Large Animal Clinical Sciences provides referral service, routine care, emergency care, and herd disease outbreak investigations for horse and livestock owners. The faculty of Large Animal Clinical Sciences are dedicated to providing the most up-to-date care for large animals, continuing education for the community and practicing veterinarians who specialists in their field. These experts accept referrals from all areas of Tennessee and surrounding states. Regular hours are established for appointments, although emergencies are accepted 24 hours/day, 365 days/year. The hospital services are fully staffed with teams of senior faculty, residents, interns, students and veterinary technicians to serve the needs of our patients and clients. The new, 85,000 square feet, state-of-the-art equine and farm animal hospitals were opened in 2012. This new hospital provides the most advanced methods available for the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of horses and livestock.
