The Equine Internal Medicine and Neonatology Service at The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (UTVMC) provides health care for horses with complex medical problems such as those associated with the intestines, lungs, liver, kidney, endocrine organs, muscles, and nervous system.
Our equine medicine clinicians are specialists in internal medicine with depth of experience and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of horses. Specialty status represents 4 to 6 years of advanced training after graduation from veterinary school resulting in board certification as diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM). Working as a team with residents, interns, licensed veterinary technicians, and 4th-year veterinary students in our state-of-the-art hospital we provide advanced diagnostic treatment for our equine patients including intensive and critical care needs.
The Equine Hospital has a specially designed neonatal intensive care unit to provide care for sick or injured foals, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Our equine internal medicine specialists also work with our veterinarians who are board-certified in cardiology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, radiology, and surgery, as well as with our equine chiropractors and acupuncturists.
Our team has access to advanced diagnostic tools including:
- video endoscopy (including a 3-meter endoscope for gastroscopy of adult horses)
- ultrasonography
- diagnostic radiology
- nuclear scintigraphy
- doppler flow echocardiography
We also provide outpatient services for horses with less complex problems and routine health care such as vaccinations, health certificates, and wellness exams.
