AVMA COE Distance Education Requirements
In 2025, the AVMA Council on Education integrated guidance on distance education into its accreditation standards. Doctor of veterinary medicine degree programs must ensure that at least 85% of their curriculum is delivered via face-to-face instruction, and any course with more than 50% online content is considered a distance education course. Currently, no clinical courses may be delivered via distance education. Faculty teaching via distance education must have training in this delivery modality and must have annual professional development.
