Large Animal Clinical Sciences

General Information

  • These clinical services are available on a first-come, first-serve basis for students interested in equine medicine, equine surgery and performance/rehabilitation, equine podiatry, and farm animal medicine and surgery.
  • A maximum of 1 extern per service rotation time period.
  • Rotations are 2 weeks in duration.
  • Each rotation begins at 8:00 a.m. on Monday and finishes two weeks later.
    • Exceptions: When a federal holiday occurs on Monday, the start date is Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.
  • Students must schedule arrival to attend the beginning of each clerkship rotation and day-1 orientation. 
    • Full participation in clerkship activities requires the extern to have completed the rotation day-1 orientation. 
  • We prefer that externs schedule rotations for the full length of the clerkship(s) in which they want to rotate (i.e., 2 weeks each clerkship). 
  • All services share in intensive care, treatment, and emergency services in the evenings and on weekends. 
  • Externs are expected to participate in evening and weekend emergency and on-call activity. 
  • Podiatry is by prior approval of the service chief. 
  • The extern will be graded, if requested by the visitor’s home institution. The extern must request to be graded before the start of the rotation. Students must schedule arrival to attend the beginning of each clerkship rotation and day-1 orientation. 
    • Full participation in clerkship activities requires the extern to have completed the rotation day-1 orientation.  ​

Small Animal Clinical Sciences

General Information

These clinical services are available on a first come, first serve basis for students interested in small animal (dog and cat) medicine and surgery.

  • Each is two weeks in duration.
  • The rotations begin at 8:00 a.m. on Mondays and finish two weeks later.
  • Anesthesia service covers the intensive care unit.
  • All other services share in the evening and weekend emergency services.
