Research Summary
The stem cell and tissue regeneration program, under the direction of Dr. Madhu Dhar, uses the state-of-the-art in vitro techniques of molecular and cellular biology to isolate, characterize, and understand the biological properties of somatic tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Additive manufacturing techniques use 3D bioprinting to fabricate polymeric nanocomposites with carbon-based nanoparticles to induce the expression of tissue-specific extracellular matrix proteins resulting in tissue-specific niche for stem cell function. The program varies the concentration, form, and type of the nanoparticles to generate a variety of substrates with distinct topographic properties. All efforts of the program are being directed towards the understanding of these biological processes with a future translation into human and veterinary medicine.
