KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and the Smith Center for International Sustainable Agriculture are hosting ten Faculty Exchange Program (FEP) veterinary medicine fellows from the Philippines for the Fall semester. They will be participating in courses, training, and a mentorship program to improve their teaching skills and knowledge. Each fellow is paired with a University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture faculty mentor for the duration of the program, and those mentors will travel to their mentee’s university for a reciprocal visit in 2024.

The FEP program is funded through the Foreign Agriculture Service (FAS) at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and focuses on veterinary teacher pedagogy. Marcy Souza, professor and associate dean for outreach and global engagement at CVM, is serving as the project lead for this program. The 2023 FEP fellows and mentors are listed below:

A UTIA delegation recently traveled to Kenya, and participated in an animal health governance workshop with the 2022 USDA FEP and SEP [Scientific Exchange Program] fellows,” Tom Gill, associate professor and chair of the Smith Center, said. “We were able to see firsthand how these exchange programs boost global partnerships, while also equipping the fellows with the knowledge and skills they need to improve their teaching and research.” The partnership with the USDA FAS offers the potential to exchange knowledge and grow international collaboration at UTIA, while also working towards addressing the issues facing global agriculture.

The Smith Center invites you to the 2023 UTIA International Showcase, held in conjunction with the Herbert Study Abroad Fair, on Friday, September 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Brehm Animal Science Arena, lobby, and front lawn.
