Our Emergency and Critical Care Service (ECC) team at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center’s Equine Hospital treats horses in need of emergency medical and surgical care.
Our team, supported by board-certified specialists in surgery, internal medicine, reproduction, anesthesia and radiology is available 24-hours a day, 7 days a week to evaluate and treat medical conditions and perform surgery on horses. The Equine Hospital is staffed to provide around-the-clock monitoring and treatment of our hospitalized patients.
Our new intensive care unit separates critically ill patients from the general hospital population so that they can be under constant observation and receive the highest and most intensive levels of care possible. The ICU further decreases the risk that these compromised individuals might be exposed to other horses in the general ward areas. The state-of-the-art ICU provides specially-designed stalls for managing recumbent and neurologically-compromised patients and has a separate, dedicated equine neonatal ward for intensive care of compromised foals or debilitated dams.
Our veterinary medical center provides comprehensive diagnostics laboratories (e.g., clinical pathology, cytology, microbiology, parasitology and biopsy) and specialized diagnostic imaging services including radiology, ultrasound and endoscopy are available as needed in support of the ECC team.
