The Virology/Immunology Lab may experience delayed turnaround times due to short staffing.

General Information

The Clinical Virology Laboratory offers routine serological (including the Equine Infectious Anemia Routine AGID and ELISA formats (also known as the Coggins test)), molecular testing, diagnostic panels services for domestic and non-domestic species. Laboratory staff include ACVM-certified clinical microbiologists. The laboratory operates state-of-the-art instrumentation maintained according to standard operating procedures. Daily quality assurance and quality control procedures are in place to ensure accurate patient data. The laboratory additionally participates in regular external quality assessment administered by Veterinary Laboratory Association (VLA).

Announcements

Effective August 28, 2023, Dr. Mohamed Abouelkhair has decided to step away from the Virology/Immunology Lab Director position to focus on research and teaching. Pending further notice, questions and concerns about the Virology/Immunology Laboratory should be directed to Dr. Bente Flatland at bflatlan@utk.edu or to laboratory staff at virology@utk.edu.

Beginning September 7, 2023, due to short-staffing in the laboratory, turn-around times for testing may be delayed. STAT requests require preapproval from the laboratory – please call the laboratory at 865-974-5880 before submitting a STAT sample. STAT samples delivered to the VMC by 12:00 p.m. will be turned around the same day. For STAT samples delivered after 12:00 p.m., results may not be available until the following morning. Staff will make every effort to issue both routine and STAT patient results as promptly as possible. We ask and appreciate your patience.
